Hello!

My name is Sisay Abate (pronounced: SEE-SIGH A-BA-TA) and I am a 2nd Generation Master Tailor from Ethiopia.

I grew up in my father’s tailoring studio in Gondor, a city in Northern Ethiopia. My father specialized in traditional Ethiopian clothing and alterations. Every day after school I would work in the shop helping and learning from him. When he would take a coffee break, I would always go sit in his chair at the sewing machine and practice different stitch patterns with the leftover fabric. These childhood experiences made me fall in love with the complexities of women's fashion as works of art. I designed and created my first pair of pants and a matching jacket when I was 14 years old and I’ll never forget how proud my father was of me. He showed off my creations to all of his clients and friends and I carry this memory with me throughout my career.

I love working with clients to create beautiful, personalized clothing that makes them feel like their best selves. I have been a tailor in Las Vegas and now in Silver Spring, MD. I am so thankful for my loyal clientele who consistently recommend my craftsmanship to their friends and help me build my skills towards my lifelong passion. One day I hope you will see me on Project Runway because that is my dream.
